PRIORY OF SION BIBLIOGRAPHY

‘Children of the Holy Blood and the Holy Grail’

BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE PRIORY OF SION, RENNES-LE-CHÂTEAU,
THE DA VINCI CODE, ROSSLYN CHAPEL,
LANDSCAPE GEOMETRY AND OTHER MODERN MYTHS

Paul Smith

The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail has a lot to answer for — having spawned a whole plethora of “non-fiction” titles that are nothing else but good examples of pseudo-history — with the various theories being based on wishful thinking rather than on historical evidence. The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail is singularly responsible for having inspired a new generation trend of “research” that some modern critics have labelled as COUNTERKNOWLEDGE — whereby these category of writers present myths as facts and try to generate credibility by offering its readers reams upon reams of footnotes and references in their books.

The Bibliography in the authors’ alphabetical order below listing the English-Language Titles is not accurate nor is it exhaustive — but the ONLY books that stand out from the list as being historically reliable and based upon documented evidence are those by Bill Putnam and John Edwin Wood — The Treasure of Rennes-le-Chateau: A Mystery Solved — and those by Robert L.D. Cooper in relation to Freemasonry and to the history of Rosslyn Chapel.

Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code encapsulated the author’s belief that he was writing historical fact in the form of a novel — and because Dan Brown repeated the errors on the history of Christianity found in books like The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail — many Christian historians have taken him to task over this, and their many books are also listed in the Bibliography below.

Those titles not having any direct relation to the Priory of Sion and to Rennes-le-Château et al — ie, those authored by Timothy Wallace-Murphy, Robert Lomas, etc — still nevertheless bear the similar process of theory-construction that is present in The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail — bearing the same Leaps of Faith and that well-known trademark of omitting historical facts that contradict the author’s respective wishful thinking. And so a new generation of pseudo-historical books have emerged on subject matters like the Knights Templar, Freemasonry and Rosslyn Chapel. The pseudo-titles on Rosslyn Chapel emerged directly from what was claimed in The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail and so we now have many people who seriously believe that Henry St Clair travelled to America, that Rosslyn Chapel was built by the Templars, that the first Grand Master of the Templars was married to a Sinclair, that the Bloodline of Jesus Christ is found among that particular family to this very day, and so on.

The theory of Landscape Geometry was first proposed by writers such as Alfred Watkins (The Old Straight Track, 1925), Katharine Maltwood (A Guide to Glastonbury’s Temple of the Stars, 1929) and John Michell (The View over Atlantis, 1969) — and Gerald Hawkins bombarded the prehistoric monument Stonehenge with numerous ‘alignments’ in his book, Stonehenge Decoded (1966; in collaboration with John B. White) ‘concluding’ that the monument was a ‘Neolithic computer’ — despite the complete lack of historical sources for its existence Landscape Geometry took off in a big way amongst the ‘Earth Mysteries’ devotees — so naturally today’s liberal-minded “researchers” have inevitably applied the “discipline” to the subject matter of Rennes-le-Château (David Wood, Elizabeth Van Buren, Henry Lincoln, etc).

However, putting things to the critical test has not entirely died out and recent Titles by David Aaronovitch, Michael Haag, Sharan Newman and Juliette Wood (listed below) also serve as reliable historical references that are free from belief-based agendas.

For example, the mistaken claim by René Descadeillas that Bishop de Beauséjour “lifted Saunière’s suspension” was rectified by Jean-Jacques Bédu in 1990 (in his book, Rennes-le-Château: Autopsie d’un mythe); here is a scan of the letter dated 22 January 1917 from Saunière’s lawyer — who was still working on the priest’s re-instatement on the date of his death. Also, there is a receipt in existence from Joseph Fabre showing that the roof for the Villa Béthanie cost 412.50 francs — showing that the amounts involved in creating Saunière’s estate could easily have originated from the selling of masses
